The Eagles, who were ranked #4 in the state going into the game, came out strong and dominated the contest, winning 6-0 in the final game at Eagle Field for ten Eagle players and one manager
.
Eight minutes into the game senior Ricardo Vasquez placed a long throw-in in front of the goal where sophomore forward Matt Weaver pressured the Eureka keeper into making a mistake giving the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
Just over two minutes later Vasquez was fouled inside the Highlander box leading to a penalty kick by senior Angel Hernandez who lifted the Eagle lead to 2-0.
The Eagles added two more scores before the half with Vasquez placing another throw in front of the Eureka goal and senior midfielder Marcus Dorsey finishing it into the net to raise the score to 3-0.
Less than a minute later, freshman Ismail Vasquez scored off of an assist from senior midfielder Raul Tinoco sending the Eagles into the locker room at halftime leading 4-0.
“This is the most balanced team I’ve had,” said Eagles coach Kevin Shinn. “Our defense, our midfielders, and our forwards all contribute to make this team successful. Marcus Dorsey, Ricardo Vasquez, Angel Hernandez, and Weston Nelson are the captains for this team and do an excellent job providing leadership on the field.”
The Eagles scored their fifth goal of the night seven minutes into the second half as junior forward Juan Hernandez launched a long crossing pass to Weaver in the center of the penalty area where he guided it past the Highlander keeper moving the score to 5-0.
The final Eagle score came with 8:51 left in the game as sophomore defender Zack Hawkins made a long pass from midfield to just inside the Eureka penalty area where Weaver beat the Highlander keeper to the ball and scored his third goal of the night lifting the score to 6-0.
The Eagles will play in the first round of the state playoffs Friday April 30 at 4:00 p.m. at Burns Park in Little Rock.
“I’m very proud of the progress our team has made this year. Sophomore Matt Weaver is one goal away from tying the all-time season record of Martin Wienheus of 28. Juan Hernandez is not far behind him with 17 goals this season,” said Coach Shinn. “Junior goalkeeper Pablo Chombo has 139 saves for us this season and, along with Nelson, have been the foundation of our defense.”
